Our skies, at times, were empty of joy and filled with smoke. Some of our drought-dry lakes and reservoirs evaporated before our eyes before wakeboarders could have their best moments. Undaunted, we still got outdoors during the summer of 2008 and paddled, pedaled, ran and rowed, fished and splashed through June, the Eppie's of July and the dog days that led to August. And here we are at summer's end, so soon. The last hurrah of Labor Day weekend beckons while a few captured images from these Bee staff photographers remind us that, come hellfire or low water, we will be outdoors....(more)

Christian Brothers High School Alumni Association. Award-winning wines from 80 participating wineries will be poured at the 21st annual wine-tasting extravaganza from 7 to 10 p.m. Sept. 5 at the school, 4315 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Food, including desserts, will be provided by more than 35 area restaurants along with samples from 20 local microbreweries.
